Mezzanine guards sit at an awkward intersection. The building code treats the edge as a guard at a level change. Provincial occupational health and safety regulation treats the same edge as a fall hazard in a workplace, with its own rules. And the operations team treats it as a place where pallets get lifted, carts get pushed and people work near an open drop all day. Deficiencies almost always come from a design that satisfied one of those three and ignored the other two.
What counts, and what the drop threshold means
Whatever it is called on the drawings — mezzanine, mid-level, platform, catwalk, storage deck — the guard question turns on the same trigger used everywhere else in the building: guards are required where the drop exceeds 600 mm. That catches a surprising number of low platforms that project teams assume are exempt, including equipment plinths, raised retail displays and loading decks that sit only a few steps up.
Guard height at a mezzanine edge is usually the 1,070 mm figure that applies at an open floor edge rather than the lower number sometimes permitted on a stair flight, but the governing height varies by occupancy and code edition. Industrial occupancies and areas the public never enters can be treated differently from a retail mezzanine over a sales floor. This is worth confirming specifically rather than carrying a number over from another project.
The 100 mm sphere rule applies at a mezzanine edge exactly as it does on a balcony: no opening in the guard may allow a 100 mm sphere to pass. So does the non-climbable zone, roughly 140 mm to 900 mm above the walking surface, which rules out the horizontal mid-rails that industrial railing catalogues are full of. A two-rail industrial guard with a mid-rail at 530 mm is climbable by a child and does not satisfy the sphere rule, which is fine in a restricted plant area under some interpretations and completely unacceptable at a retail mezzanine. Know which one you are building.
The loading gate is where mezzanines actually fail
Almost every working mezzanine has one spot where material has to come up. That spot is where guards get removed, chained off, propped open and eventually left open. The details that work:
- A chain, a rope or a removable section leaning against a column is not a guard. If it is not a fixed engineered assembly or a purpose-built gate, it will not be in place when it matters.
- Swing gates that open outward over the void are the wrong choice — the operator is reaching over the drop to close them. Gates should swing inward over the deck, or slide.
- Self-closing gates with a positive latch beat any gate that relies on someone remembering. Spring-return hardware is inexpensive relative to the exposure.
- A double-leaf pivoting safety gate — the type where one leaf is always closed as the other opens — keeps the edge protected through the entire loading cycle. On high-frequency loading points this is the standard answer.
- Gate assemblies still have to meet the same guard height, sphere and non-climbable requirements as the fixed run they interrupt. A gate is not a relaxation.
Toe boards and what falls off the edge
A guard stops people falling off. It does nothing about a dropped wrench, a rolling stock item or a pallet corner nudged over the lip. Where people work, walk or park beneath a mezzanine, a toe board or kickplate at the deck edge is what addresses that, typically a solid upstand of roughly 100 mm to 150 mm at the floor.
This is frequently a provincial occupational health and safety requirement rather than a building code one, which is exactly why it gets missed — the design team is reading the building code and the OHS obligation lands on the operator after occupancy. Specifying it during construction costs a fraction of retrofitting it around a completed guard. If the mezzanine is in a workplace and anything happens underneath it, put the toe board in the base scope.
A guard is designed for a person leaning on it. It is not designed for a forklift finding it. Those are different problems and they need different steel.
Impact loading is not a code guard load
Code guard loads represent people: a crowd pressing against a barrier, someone falling against it, a horizontal push at the top rail. They do not represent a two-tonne forklift at walking speed. No standard guard, in aluminum or steel, will stop that, and designing one that would produces something absurd.
The correct answer is to keep the impact away from the guard. Bollards set inboard of the edge, a raised concrete curb at the deck perimeter, wheel stops at the loading position, or a structural impact rail mounted independently of the guard. Where a mezzanine sees powered equipment, we detail the guard and the impact protection as two separate systems with separate anchors, so that damage to one does not compromise the other. It also means a struck bollard can be replaced without touching the guard.
Glass or picket on a mezzanine
The choice usually follows the occupancy. In a warehouse, plant or back-of-house mezzanine, an aluminum picket system is the right product: it takes abuse, it is easy to repair in sections, it does not show dust, and it costs less. In a retail, office or hospitality mezzanine, glass wins for the reason it always wins: sight lines. A mezzanine over a sales floor exists partly so people can see down into it, and a picket guard cuts that view into slices. Glass also keeps the volume of the space reading as one room. The trade-offs are cleaning frequency in a dusty environment and higher cost per linear metre. Interior glass guards do not carry wind load, so the make-up is typically lighter than the equivalent exterior guard, which takes some of the cost sting out.
Anchoring into a mezzanine deck is its own problem
Balcony guards anchor into a structural concrete slab of known thickness. Mezzanine decks are frequently something else: steel grating, a bar-grating panel, composite steel deck with a thin concrete topping, or a plywood-and-steel assembly. A base plate anchor designed for 200 mm of structural concrete has nothing to bite into in a 65 mm topping over profiled deck, and the flutes mean the effective embedment varies depending on where the hole lands.
Where possible, the guard should land on the supporting steel — a perimeter channel, an edge angle or a beam — with connections designed as steel-to-steel rather than post-installed anchors into a thin topping. That has to be decided while the mezzanine framing is being designed, because it usually means adding an edge member. Post-installed anchoring into an existing thin topping is possible but requires a real look at edge distance, topping thickness and deck profile, and sometimes the honest answer is that a through-bolted connection to the framing below is the only sound option.
